Phuket has BJJ classes for first-timers, travelling grapplers and longer training stays. On Fitness Street, Tiger and Lions offer Brazilian jiu-jitsu alongside other combat sports. Beyond the soi, you can find dedicated grappling gyms, gi-focused clubs and larger camps in Chalong, Rawai, Bang Tao and Thalang. The useful comparison is the class format, timetable and pass you will actually use.

BJJ open mats in Phuket
An open mat usually gives you time to drill or roll with partners rather than follow a taught class. “Open” does not automatically mean free or open to non-members.
- Saturday, 09:30–10:30 — Tiger: no-gi, all levels, explicitly free to all. Open-mat details on MyFitMate.
- Saturday, 11:00 — Lions: BJJ open mat for adults and kids. Its site describes member open mats; outside-visitor access and fees are not specified. Lions open-mat listing.
- Saturday, 11:00 — Born to Roll: listed on the official timetable; separate visitor access and pricing are not stated.
- Saturday, 12:00–13:30 — Phuket Grappling Academy: its FAQ welcomes visitors to scheduled sessions, but does not advertise free open-mat entry. Academy timetable and passes.

If you have never trained BJJ, start with a coached beginner or fundamentals session. You will learn the basic positions and how to train with a partner before joining open rounds.
Before your first BJJ class
- Choose gi or no-gi. Gi classes use the jacket, trousers and belt. For no-gi, bring a fitted training top or rashguard and suitable shorts without exposed zips or hard fittings.
- Match the class to your experience. A named fundamentals class is a useful starting point. Tell the coach if it is your first session, even when the timetable says all levels.
- Sort out equipment before arriving. Tiger and Born to Roll explicitly offer gi rental, with no published rental fee. Lions says it has no loan gis. Rental availability at the other gyms is not established here.
- Use clean kit for each session. Bring water, keep nails short, remove jewellery and keep footwear off the mats. See our guide to mat hygiene and training in Phuket.
- Book through the gym’s own route. Calendar links above lead to current class information. A class appearing on MyFitMate does not reserve your place.
Common questions about BJJ in Phuket
Can I train BJJ in Phuket as a complete beginner?
Yes. Tiger has beginner no-gi sessions, Phuket Grappling Academy has fundamentals, and Bangtao has evening fundamentals. Several other gyms explicitly welcome beginners. Choose a taught session and let the coach know your experience.
Should I stay on Fitness Street or in another area?
Fitness Street is convenient if you want Tiger or Lions alongside other training on the soi. Rawai gives you Born to Roll, AKA and access to Phuket Grappling Academy; northern options suit a Bang Tao or Thalang base. Try the gym you expect to use most before committing to accommodation for a long stay.
Can I train without buying a month?
Yes. The price table includes single-class, daily and weekly passes. Check the pass label: a single class, an unlimited day and an all-sport package cover different amounts of training.
